Refining Your Search

To help you refine your search for items, the Products page provides these options:

The search bar is displayed at the top of the page. The You Searched For box and item category tree are displayed on the left side of the page. Filtering options are displayed beneath the banner picture, if available, or under the search bar. Items found based on your search criteria are displayed in the center of the page.

Search Bar

The search bar allows you to search for categories of items or individual items. After you click Filter, the category or item you entered (including the wildcard character, if used) is added to the You Searched For box.

For a category search, all items found in any categories matching your search criteria are displayed on the page. For example, if you enter Bi* in the Category field and then click Filter, Bi* is displayed in the You Searched For box, and the page displays all items contained in all categories whose names begin with Bi, such as Bicycles and Bicycle Parts. The item category tree displays only categories that contain items shown on the page.

For an item search, all items that have an item number matching your search criteria are displayed on the page. For example, if you enter FA* in the Item field and then click Filter, FA* is displayed in the You Searched For box, and the page displays all items whose item number begins with FA. Again, the item category tree displays only categories that contain items shown on the page.

You Searched For

The You Searched For box accumulates each refinement of your search and displays a list of the categories, subcategories, and items you have selected. If the box has only one entry, all items that match that entry are displayed on the page. If the box has multiple entries, all items that are common to all entries (using the AND operator) are displayed. If the box has no entries, all items are displayed.

You can remove a category or item filter from the box by clicking the X next to it. Page content is updated accordingly.

Item Category Tree

The item category tree shows categories that contain the items displayed on the page as a result of your search selections. You can use the tree to quickly find a category of items you are interested in.

Categories are shown in the tree only if they contain at least one item that matches your search criteria or if they have a subcategory containing at least one item that matches your search criteria. The number of matching items in each category is also displayed.

The categories available to be shown in the tree are predefined in our system, based on the items we offer and the categories we create to contain them.

In the tree, you can expand and collapse any category by clicking on it. When you expand a top-level item category, that category is added to the You Searched For box. When you click a subcategory, that subcategory and all categories above it in the tree are added to the You Searched For box. When you click a category heading, it is not added to the You Searched For box. Category headings are shown in a larger, bold font and can contain categories but not items.
